DOODY'S BOOK REVIEW
REVIEWER'S EXPERT OPINION
REVIEWER'S EXPERT OPINION Ashoke Khanwalkar, MD (Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine)
|
Description
Arranged mostly in bulleted lists, this book offers a surface overview of the basics of otolaryngology, with an emphasis on the practical aspects of the field, including history taking and physical examination. The previous edition was published in 2015.
|
Purpose
The aim is to provide a brief introductory synopsis of otolaryngology by focusing on the practical aspects of the field. It essentially would serve as a pocket reference for young trainees. While the objective is worthy, the book is perhaps better suited for trainees in India rather than in the U.S., given the focus of the book. Furthermore, there are other books that serve as pocket references, albeit at a higher cost.
|
Audience
The intended audience is mainly medical students, but the author also believes the book may be of benefit as a refresher for those in residency training. The level and depth of content are better suited for the medical student population, as resident trainees likely require a more granular and detailed discussion. Given his accolades, the author appears to be a preeminent scholar in India, although his level of recognition internationally is unclear.
|
Features
The book covers aspects of history taking and directed physical examination for various presenting complaints followed by a brief discussion of radiography. It discusses indications, technique, and postoperative complications for some of the most common procedures in otolaryngology.
Following are supplemental sections on audiology, calorimetry, bone anatomy, and common instrumentation.
|
Assessment
This book ultimately provides another resource for those exploring or entering the field to gain a broad cursory exposure to the various subdivisions within otolaryngology. It is perhaps best in regards to framing the way in which a history is obtained and a physical examination is performed. Unfortunately, due to differences in the way in which medicine is practiced in the author's home country compared to the U.S., there are many instances where the relevant information is either missing or not applicable. Other titles popular among medical students and residents, including ENT Secrets, 4th edition, Scholes and Ramakrishnan, (Elsevier, 2016) and Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery: Clinical Reference Guide, 5th edition, Pasha and Golub (Plural Publishing, 2018), contain much of the needed background, albeit at a higher cost, particularly for the latter. Given that even this updated edition does not accurately describe the way in which otolaryngology is currently practiced in the U.S., it is unclear whether it was justified to replace the previous edition. However, it may provide up-to-date advances for the author's domestic readers.
