DOODY'S BOOK REVIEW
REVIEWER'S EXPERT OPINION

Samuel J. Chmell, MD (University of Illinois at Chicago College of Medicine)

Description

and conversion hip replacement arthroplasty in adults. It provides surgeons with a quick first reference in planning for a difficult case.

Purpose

and didactic text. It is intended to be used as a clinical and surgical guide, with step-by-step explanations of various hip conditions and replacement procedures. This objective has been reasonably well met. It should be noted that the book is not intended to cover revision arthroplasty.

Audience

The audience includes both established orthopedic surgeons and surgeons in training. The author and contributors are credible authorities.

Features

The many images, radiographs, and illustrations help highlight the important points in safely accomplishing a given operation. One of the classic questions regarding a hip operation has been: "What approach will you use?"

This book concisely covers each of the modern approaches used for primary and conversion hip replacement arthroplasty. The references are adequate, but often dated. The index is scant.

Assessment

This will be a useful addition to the academic orthopedic surgical library, but even more so to the medical library at community hospitals. It serves its purpose well.
