DOODY'S BOOK REVIEW
REVIEWER'S EXPERT OPINION
Philip M Spanheimer, MD(University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics)
|
Description
ases of the thyroid, including intraoperative images of the thyroid gland.
|
Purpose
ll the story of the thyroid gland". This is a worthy objective as patients with thyroid disease are common and encountered by many physicians from primary care providers to specialists. The book meets the objective of providing images related to thyroid disease, from clinical pictures of patients to radiographs, intraoperative pictures, and histology, but the text in some places lacks adequate description of these conditions.
|
Audience
The author is a professor of endocrine surgery, but it is unclear from the preface for whom the book is written. While the pictures are very interesting, high quality, and meticulously collected, the format, as a visual atlas with little text, limits its utility for all audiences. There is insufficient anatomic and physiologic explanation for students, insufficient clinical diagnosis and treatment discussion for primary care physicians, information that is routine for specialists, and the book is not robust enough for use as an operative atlas.
|
Features
The book begins with the examination of the thyroid and progresses through benign and malignant disorders, and finally to surgical approaches. Within each section there are images of patients as they would appear in clinic, and radiographic and histologic images as appropriate. The images are outstanding and comprehensive for the vast spectrum of disease. However, the text is limited for any given image to a small number of bullet points, which prohibits explanation of complex anatomic and physiologic principles.
|
Assessment
As a visual atlas showing images of patients with thyroid disorders, intraoperative images of thyroid surgery, radiographs, and histology, this book is excellent. However, the text does little to explain what is being shown.
