Quick Overview
The Atlas of Laparoscopic and Robotic Urologic Oncological Surgery is a unique surgical atlas. It is solely dedicated to the principles and art of minimally invasive surgery as applied to urologic oncology. This atlas provides a compilation of chapters, each written by world-renowned experts in the field of minimally invasive urologic surgery. As such it is a compilation of valuable experience gained by each author in this rapidly evolving and exciting field within urology. Each chapter contains detailed procedural steps augmented by patient preparation and valuable insights into necessary instrumentation and equipment for each procedure. The chapters include numerous and detailed intraoperative photographs depicting critical procedural steps. All major oncologic procedures are covered. Pure laparoscopic techniques are depicted in chapters separate from their robotic counterpart. The aim of this atlas is to provide the targeted readership with the necessary information to embark on expanding their surgical armamentarium and alleviate the often difficult and steep learning curve. As such, it is a valuable adjunct for surgeons embarking on laparoscopic and robotic urologic oncological surgery. It can also be equally valuable for experienced laparoscopic surgeons who want to embrace robotic surgery. But most of all, this atlas will provide the surgeon in training, namely residents in urology and fellows in laparoscopic and robotic urologic surgery a quick and easy-to-use reference for minimally invasive urologic oncological surgery.
Key Features
Divided into three sections: aesthesia and Setup, Upper Tract Surgery and Lower Tract Surgery.

All common urologic oncological procedures are described in their pure laparoscopic and robotic form in separate chapters.

The text begins with describing anaesthesia setup and instruments needed for laparoscopic and robotic surgery followed by robotic assisted and laparoscopic nephrectomy surgeries of upper tracts ending with prostatectomy procedures related to lower tract.

Some important topic covered includes Laparoscopic and Robotic Instrumentation, Hand-Assisted Laparoscopic Radical Nephrectomy, Laparoscopic and Robot-Assisted Adrenalectomy, Laparoscopic Radical Prostatectomy, Laparoscopic Nephroureterectomy.

Provide the expert in urologic laparoscopic surgery, the necessary tools to adopt the robotic approach and also compare and contrast the procedures side by side in a single volume.

Includes more than 500 detailed coloured intraoperative photographs depicting critical sequential procedural steps.
Target Audience
Laparoscopic and Robotic Urologic Oncological Surgeons, Residents and Fellows in Training

REVIEWER'S EXPERT OPINION

James A. Brown, MD (University of Iowa Carver College of Medicine)

Description

a Vinci robotic assisted laparoscopic urologic surgery thoroughly cover these varying approaches to upper and lower urinary tract surgery, including anesthesia and setup. The sections and chapters are well organized with excellent tables, figures, and comprehensive intraoperative photographs.

Purpose

The purpose is to present an excellent side-by-side comparison of the various laparoscopic techniques, including extraperitoneal, laparoendoscopic single site (LESS), and hand-assisted laparoscopic (HAL), and robotic approaches to the wide range of upper and lower urinary tract surgical procedures. The initial section covers anesthesia and setup and is followed by chapters replete with effective diagrams and step-by-step illustrations. The book ends with a thorough index.

Audience

The book is intended for students, residents, or urologic practitioners wishing to develop a deep general understanding of the varying minimally invasive urologic surgical procedures or to master the nuances and relative advantages and disadvantages of each surgical approach. The authors are well known authorities across the wide range of laparoscopic and robotic procedures presented.

Features

The first two chapters present the anesthesia needed for and instrumentation used to perform both laparoscopic and robotic urologic surgery. The next nine chapters present varying laparoscopic, robotic, and laparoendoscopic single-site (LESS) approaches to total and partial nephrectomy as well as nephroureterectomy, adrenalectomy, and caval thrombectomy. The final 13 chapters cover the wide range of minimally invasive surgical approaches to prostatectomy, total and partial cystectomy, distal ureterectomy, and pelvic and retroperitoneal lymph node dissection, plus renal thermal ablation and laparoscopic complications. The comprehensive side-by-side comparisons and extensive illustrations are the book's strengths.

Assessment

This is a valuable, unique asset for all residents and practitioners wanting to master or further expand their minimally invasive urologic surgery armamentarium. It provides a unique comparison of competing surgical approaches. It is very thorough, containing extensive illustrations and written by world-renowned, cutting-edge experts in the field.
