DOODY'S BOOK REVIEW
REVIEWER'S EXPERT OPINION

Vincent F Carr, DO, MSA, FACC, FACP (Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences)

Description

As the title suggests, this book takes a symptom-based approach to common disorders one may encounter in a primary care practice.

Purpose

It is intended to help develop a differential diagnosis based upon the presenting symptom. As one rarely guesses the correct diagnosis on the first round, this approach allows clinicians to consider a few common diagnoses concurrently, so ancillary testing may be requested yielding the correct diagnosis.

Audience

The author appears to be writing for clinicians in the Indian medical system, focusing on the particular conditions and customs of the area. The book is very basic, but one with high utility.

Features

Each chapter has an opening synopsis, followed by a list of the differential diagnoses and the appropriate diagnostic investigation, and ends with red flags and references.

Assessment

The book is quite well done, delivering the information adequately without figures, photos, and algorithms while providing appropriate references. This is a very helpful and utilitarian book for office-based clinicians.
