DOODY'S BOOK REVIEW
REVIEWER'S EXPERT OPINION
Anthony Shanks, MD(Washington University School of Medicine)
|
Description
This is an internationally authored book on the diagnosis and management of hypertension in pregnancy.
|
Purpose
It provides common treatment algorithms in addition to background on the pathophysiology and updated terminology about hypertensive disease in pregnant patients.
|
Audience
The audience includes postgraduates, residents, and fellows in obstetrics and gynecology. The authors are from the U.K. and India.
|
Features
The book is well written with ample citations of the literature throughout.
Although the references are plentiful, they are incorporated well into the text and are not distracting. Figures and flow charts also stand out. For example, page 70-71 has good ultrasound images and Doppler findings to accompany the text. I also appreciate the basic summaries that present accurate and timely material. In addition to the helpful table of contents, the index is very functional for directed reading.
|
Assessment
This depth of this book is surprising, considering its relative brevity (in terms of pages). It's a nice review and incorporates evidence-based medicine well.
