DOODY'S BOOK REVIEW
REVIEWER'S EXPERT OPINION

Matthew D Wise, MD(University of Chicago Medical Center)

Description

This is an ambitious effort to survey the clinical spectrum of diabetes.

Purpose

abetes resource and reference. With the growing prevalence of diabetes, developing new educational tools is useful.

Audience

arge medical institution in North India with years of educational, research, and administrative experience. He describes a targeted effort to educate patients, providers of care, and trainees, but the book appears most appropriate for healthcare providers and trainees.

Features

Each of the six chapters covers numerous succinct topics, generally in 2 to 3 paragraphs, on focused clinical facets of diabetes. Current concepts of diabetes classification and pathophysiology are well described, at a level of detail appropriate for clinicians. The book excels in the treatment sections, which highlight newer classes of diabetic oral agents and modern technology in the treatment of diabetes with insulin pumps and continuous-glucose monitoring devices. Very recent changes, such as the inclusion of hemoglobin A1C in the diagnostic criteria for diabetes, are not covered. The book is accompanied by a mini CD-ROM with the full set of images from the book organized by chapter. While there are some poor quality photos, most images are clear.

Assessment

Overall, this book serves as an easy-to-read and worthwhile review that efficiently describes broad aspects of diabetes. It achieves mixed success in aiming to appeal to both patients and providers, as the former might find many sections and concepts difficult to follow, while the latter may occasionally desire more detail.
