DOODY'S BOOK REVIEW
REVIEWER'S EXPERT OPINION

David J Hernandez, B.S., M.D.(Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine)

Description

This is a quick reference for the many physicians who see patients with ear, nose, and throat complaints. It begins with an introduction to the fundamentals of head and neck anatomy and physiology before delving into some common diseases in otolaryngology

Purpose

ysicians (general practitioners, pediatricians, emergency physicians) with a quick reference to many common diseases of the ears, nose, and throat. This is indeed a worthy objective, since patients often initially present to their primary care physicians or the emergency department for initial evaluation and treatment. However, some important aspects of otolaryngology are omitted from this book, including facial trauma, facial plastics, and some aspects of laryngology.

Audience

ts and physicians of various backgrounds and experience levels, such as general practitioners, pediatricians, and emergency physicians. The authors are ENT consultants in the U.K.

Features

An introduction to anatomy, fundamentals, and physiology relevant to otolaryngology begins the book. It then covers diseases within the divisions of otology, rhinology, head and neck, and pediatrics. Common clinical vignettes or scenarios introduce the various topics. The otology section is absolutely wonderful, very thorough and well designed. One of the book's best features is the quality, clarity, and utility of the photographs. The illustrations are somewhat oversimplified at times, however.

Assessment

This is an excellent resource for medical students and any physicians who come across patients with common complaints well known to otolaryngologists. It also helps healthcare providers tune into more serious diagnoses that are important not to overlook. This book's photographs and images are of superior quality and utility compared to other, similar books.
